KGF Chapter 2 Box Office Collection: How Yash’s Blockbuster Shattered Records

When “KGF: Chapter 2” hit theatres on April 14, 2022, nobody was quite prepared for the scale of what followed. The Kannada-language action epic, directed by Prashanth Neel and starring Yash, didn’t just perform well — it rewrote the record books for Indian cinema and turned into one of the biggest theatrical events the country has ever seen.

Here’s a full breakdown of how the numbers stacked up.

Opening Day: A Statement of Intent

The film opened to roughly Rs. 164 crores worldwide on day one, an enormous number for any film, let alone a regional-language release. It became one of the highest opening-day grossers in Indian film history and immediately signalled that this wasn’t going to be a normal run.

The First Week

The momentum didn’t dip — if anything, it built. By day two, the film had already crossed its predecessor’s entire lifetime earnings, making it the highest-grossing Kannada film ever within 48 hours of release. A few key milestones from the opening stretch:

  • Day 2: Around Rs. 286 crores worldwide
  • Day 3: Roughly Rs. 104 crores added, taking the three-day total to about Rs. 390 crores
  • Day 4: Crossed Rs. 550 crores globally
  • End of week one: Around Rs. 719 crores worldwide

The Hindi-dubbed version alone was a phenomenon in its own right, collecting close to Rs. 255 crore net in its first week and becoming the fastest Hindi film at the time to cross the Rs. 250 crore mark domestically.

Crossing the Rs. 1,000 Crore Mark

Within just 14 days of release, KGF Chapter 2 breached the Rs. 1,000 crore mark at the worldwide box office. That made it only the fourth Indian film ever to hit that milestone, following “Dangal,” “Baahubali 2,” and “RRR” — and the first-ever film of Kannada origin to do so. Trade analysts at the time called it historic, and it’s easy to see why: a regional-language film had just gone toe-to-toe with the biggest pan-India blockbusters ever made.

Final Numbers

By the time its theatrical run wound down, the film’s collections had settled at roughly the following (figures vary slightly by source, since trade estimates differ):

  • India net collection: Approximately Rs. 980–992 crores
  • Overseas collection: Around $27 million (roughly Rs. 207 crores)
  • Worldwide gross: Approximately Rs. 1,187–1,250 crores, depending on the tracker

This made KGF Chapter 2 the second-highest-grossing film in Indian box office history at the time, trailing only “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion,” and edging out “RRR” by a comfortable margin domestically.

Regional breakdown (India)

  • Karnataka: ~Rs. 161.5 crores
  • Andhra Pradesh/Telangana: ~Rs. 150 crores
  • North India: ~Rs. 494 crores
  • Tamil Nadu: ~Rs. 108 crores
  • Kerala: ~Rs. 66.5 crores

Overseas highlights

  • North America: ~$7.45 million
  • Middle East: ~$8.13 million
  • Australia: ~$2.53 million
  • UK: ~$1.46 million

Footfalls

Beyond the rupee figures, the sheer number of people who showed up mattered just as much. The film is estimated to have drawn over 5.2 crore admissions in India alone — one of the highest footfall counts of the 21st century for any Indian film.

Why It Mattered

KGF Chapter 2’s numbers weren’t just impressive in isolation — they proved something the industry had been circling for a few years: that a film made primarily in Kannada, without the traditional Bollywood machinery behind it, could out-earn nearly every Hindi film ever made. It cemented Yash as a genuine pan-India star and set the stage for “KGF: Chapter 3,” which is currently in development.

Note: Box office figures for Indian films are typically reported as trade estimates rather than officially audited numbers, so small variations between sources (Sacnilk, Bollywood Hungama, Box Office India, trade analysts) are normal and expected.
